COURSE OVERVIEW
This Asian Studies course is a fully online asynchronous course offered by Dr. Jacqueline Fewkes (Professor of Anthropology) from the Honors College of Florida Atlantic University.
The course is designed to offer students an fascinating introduction to the history, literature, cultures, and contemporary global roles of Asia, while at the same time challenging our preconceptions about what we mean by the term "Asia" itself.
The course is appropriate for those who have never studied the topic before, as well as those who would like to specialize in the region.
The ASN 3006 listing of the course is an honors version that fulfills Honors College core course HUM-B, and GC-B requirements, as well as an area studies course for Anthropology and International Studies concentrations. It can also be used to count towards the FAU certificate in Asian Studies.
The ANT 4930 listing version of the course is a non-Honors course that can be used to count towards summer course requirements, as well as the FAU certificate in Asian Studies. It can also fulfill an anthropology major requirement for an upper division course in socio-cultural anthropology.
COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS
This course is divided into 6 units-- an introductory unit to orient students to the course, and 5 topical units-- that students complete within a general time frame (usually 2-3 weeks per unit) so that they have freedom of scheduling, while also being provided with a course structure to keep them on track throughout the semester.
Coursework consists of asynchronous small group discussion posts and quizzes. All course quizzes are open book with unlimited multiple attempts allowed to facilitate the learning process.
