TEACHING AND MENTORING HIGHLIGHTS

Appointed “Master Teacher” appointment for Wilkes Honors College.  Responsibilities include mentoring junior faculty, and providing faculty training seminars. 2019.

Advisory group member for Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, and International Studies concentrations, as well as Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Theory of Knowledge minor concentrations.


Appointed faculty mentor for the Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship Program, which supports student-leaders to attend the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University.  Mentoring activities included overseeing internships and study abroad programs, conducting a student-leaders seminar, participating in retreats with students, and encouraging students to present their work in conference venues.  2012-2017.


College and/or campus nominee for multiple university level teaching and mentoring awards.


Created and maintains an official college Anthropology Facebook page to disseminate anthropology-related materials and events to students and alumni.


Designed and conducted an IRB seminar for social science students to help prepare for IRB submissions related to future thesis projects.  Seminar is open to interested students in the college from all disciplines.


Developed an anthropology lab through equipment purchases using external grant funding, and conducted student training on lab equipment.


Encourages and organizes student submissions for conferences.  Undergraduate student presentations to date have been at the American Anthropological Association nation meetings (7 students), the Florida Collegiate Honors Council Conference (40 students), and at the Florida Conference of Historians state meetings (1 student).


Faculty advisor for the Anthropology Club and Muslim Students Union. Faculty advisory position includes helping student club members to organize and participate in a number of educational events offered on the campus.

Participant in FAU “Academic Service-Learning” Faculty Learning community. 2010-2011.


Participated in the “Florida on the Edge of Tomorrow” summer high school Humanities Programs June 2014 and June 2015.


Student Advisor, which includes supervising student internships, and acting as thesis advisor for senior honors theses in anthropology and interdisciplinary political science.  Have also acted as faculty reader on senior honors theses for students in environmental studies, interdisciplinary political science, interdisciplinary economics, and international studies.


Successfully sought funding and organized an Honors College Anthropology Spring Colloquium for Spring 2015 and Spring 2016.  Brought 4 practicing anthropologists (both academic and non-academic) to campus each semester to give talks about their work and meet with FAU students interested in pursuing work in related fields.
